Now that seems simple enough, right? Well, if you’re in project management, you know to expect hiccups.

Currently, within the communications department at ROI, there are two project managers. You have probably heard of a project manager, but what exactly does it mean to be one at a digital marketing company?

Typically, when the company onboards a new client, the project manager is the first person that the company will be in contact with. This is to make sure the meetings are set up, contacts are properly made, and to ease the client into the routine of relying on someone outside of their company to do their marketing. There are so many other things that go into being a project manager. Here are four tips on how to become a kickass project manager:

1) Communicate with your team and client

There is a reason that ROI has a communications department and the project managers are housed here. Communication between the client and the team needs a dedicated department in order to run seamlessly. Without proper communication, the project can veer off path, which leads to an unhappy client. And as I’m sure you have all encountered an unhappy client before. Let’s just say it’s not a happy experience for anyone.

2)  Stay organized

As a project manager, it is imperative to stay organized. Without organization, the project can get derailed. It’s easy for tasks to fall through the cracks and to-do items add up quickly. ROI uses the online project management tool ClickUp to make individual staff members, departments and clients responsible for their to-dos. ClickUp offers transparency and encourages accountability in all parties involved. For a free, similar online project management tool, try Trello.

3) Don’t sweat the small stuff

Sometimes, you have to be the bad guy. Whether it is a client who is not complying or you have to deliver bad news, it is something that comes up often. Although it sucks, it’s best for the project to address these problems before they get out of control.

We all make mistakes, it is human nature. There are times when it seems impossible to please the client and your other team members. There will be days when you want to throw your computer at the wall. While it’s easy to want to push these items or clients onto other people, there is always a solution for every problem. Stay focused on the end result, and don’t give up!

4) Always strive to get the most out of your project and client

Your client is paying good money for you to help improve their business. Do not let the project become stagnant! Challenge your client to work with you to come up with great content that takes their website and business to a completely different level.
